To further accelerate the gathering of high-level talents and teams at home and abroad and help Suzhou build a "paradise for entrepreneurs and innovators", the 2021 "Win in Suzhou, Create and Win the Future" International Maker Competition is coming with great momentum. The preliminary selection of projects was fully launched on March 12th, and the global finals will be held in July. Airui Global Translation provided Chinese-English simultaneous interpretation and equipment rental services for this competition. This year's competition is continuously hosted by the Settled Enterprises Alliance of Suzhou International Elite Entrepreneurship Week and co-organized by units such as the Suzhou International and Domestic Maker Incubation Center and the Suzhou Overseas Cooperation Organization for Talent Work. There are a total of 5 domestic sub-competition areas including Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei, Greater Bay Area, Yangtze River Delta, Central China Region, and Southwest China, as well as 10 overseas sub-competition areas including Oceania, Sweden, Japan, North America, Europe, Finland, Singapore, France, United Kingdom, and Germany, and the global finals. The scale of the competition reaches a historical high. The domestic sub-competition areas hold on-site competitions offline, while the overseas sub-competition areas adopt the "dual-venue" model of overseas and Suzhou. Through cross-border "screen-to-screen" online roadshows, a "cloud arena" is built to strive to attract more talent projects to Suzhou with flexible and diversified participation and docking methods.
It is reported that the "Win in Suzhou, Create and Win the Future" International Maker Competition was founded in 2011 and is hosted by the Settled Enterprises Alliance of Suzhou International Elite Entrepreneurship Week. It is a global high-level talent innovation and entrepreneurship competition brand carefully built by Suzhou. The competition interacts with Suzhou International Elite Entrepreneurship Week, aiming to continuously explore outstanding talents (teams) and projects in leading industries and frontier scientific and technological fields, promote the precise docking of talents, projects, industries, and capital, and build a green channel for innovation and entrepreneurship leading to Suzhou. By 2020, the competition had been successfully held for 9 sessions with a total of 58 events, covering more than 40 countries and regions around the world such as the United States, Germany, United Kingdom, Israel, Japan, Australia, and Singapore. A total of more than 6,200 projects were attracted to participate, and more than 28,000 talents (times) participated in on-site activities. It has successfully helped a large number of talents take root in Suzhou and bravely start their great undertakings, forming an international competition brand that covers the world, focuses on industries, has distinct characteristics, and combines advantages.
This year's competition solicits and preliminarily selects projects globally. The sub-competition areas adopt the online email registration method, and the finalists are selected from the winning projects of each sub-competition area. Contestants can log in to the competition website and WeChat official account, download and fill in the registration form, and send it to the designated email address of each competition area for registration. There are a total of 104 award-winning places in the competition. Based on the generous bonus incentives, the "through train" system of the municipal leading talent policy is strengthened and upgraded, and the "green channel" for docking the participating projects with talent policies and talent services is established and improved to provide all-round support for the award-winning projects to settle in Suzhou.
Compared with previous years, under the premise of strictly implementing the requirements of epidemic prevention and control, this year's competition actively adapts to the new era and new situation, more prominently highlights the orientation of "focusing, being practical, being open, and being innovative", expands the scale of the competition, optimizes the competition organization mode, increases policy incentives, and strengthens settlement services, striving to build the "optimal window" for Suzhou's innovation and entrepreneurship facing the world. Overall, it presents the following four characteristic highlights:
First, the scale of the competition has increased. This year's competition adheres to the linkage between domestic and overseas, further optimizes the global layout, expands the scope of the competition, increases the frequency of holding, newly adds the Southwest China domestic sub-competition area, and resets overseas sub-competition areas such as Oceania, Sweden, Finland, Singapore, and France. With the model of "15 sub-competition areas + global finals", it reaches the historical high of the competition's scale. In line with the requirements of epidemic prevention and control, the domestic sub-competition areas hold on-site competitions offline in Beijing, Shanghai, Shenzhen, Wuhan and Chengdu, while the overseas sub-competition areas still adopt the "dual-venue" mode of overseas and Suzhou. Through cross-border "screen-to-screen" online roadshows, a "cloud arena" is built to strive to attract more talent projects to Suzhou with flexible and diversified participation and docking methods.
Second, the industrial track has been widened. This year's competition focuses on building the "Suzhou Manufacturing" brand and accelerating the construction of a modern industrial system, further strengthening the innovation orientation and talent attraction along the industrial chain, and focusing on increasing the invitation to participate in projects in key emerging industries, leading industries, "bottleneck" technologies, and digital economy fields in Suzhou. The sub-competition areas newly organize vertical industrial professional competitions, with a total of 9 major industrial tracks. Each competition area combines the advantageous industries of the host city, each focusing on 1-3 industrial groups for competition, striving to form an innovative cooperation mechanism across regions and industries. For the first time, the overseas sub-competition areas adopt the "dual-selection model" of ten county-level cities and districts in Suzhou and overseas hosting institutions to organize competitions, closely following the industrial layout and recruitment needs of various places in Suzhou, and constructing a project solicitation and competition system with different focuses, distinct characteristics, and synchronous resonance.
Third, policy support has been strengthened. There are a total of 104 award-winning places in this year's competition. Based on the generous bonus, this year's competition strengthens and upgrades the "through train" system of the municipal leading talent policy, establishes and improves the "green channel" for docking the participating projects with talent policies and talent services, and provides all-round support for the award-winning projects to settle in Suzhou. Among them, the settlement projects of the first prize in the finals and the second and third prizes that have received investment of more than 10 million yuan from market-oriented funds can directly be included in the Gusu Leading Talent Plan, and after the project is landed in Suzhou, relevant support policies will be enjoyed according to regulations; other second and third prize projects directly enter the interview stage of the Gusu Leading Talent Plan. The first prize projects in the sub-competition areas directly enter the interview of the Gusu Leading Talent; second and third prize projects can appropriately break through limitations such as educational background and time of arrival in Suzhou to apply for the Gusu Leading Talent. The winning projects of the competition can also obtain the "through card" for participating in Suzhou International Elite Entrepreneurship Week, enabling zero-distance docking with the high-quality and abundant innovation and entrepreneurship resources in Suzhou.
Fourth, market forces are added. Focusing on the "first bucket of gold" for entrepreneurship, relying on state-owned mother funds such as the Suzhou Angel Mother Fund and the Gusu Talent Fund, guiding sub-funds to invest in high-quality projects of the competition. Gathering more than a hundred first-line venture capitalists to fully participate in the competition, inviting top venture capitalists and heads of leading enterprises to serve as judges and mentors, providing full-course entrepreneurship coaching and capacity acceleration for participating projects, promoting the high-level circulation of technology, capital, and industry, and allowing more scientific and technological innovation achievements to move from the "laboratory" to the "market", from the "bookshelf" to the "shelf". Focusing on the "first station" for entrepreneurship, optimizing the "Yun Chuang Hui" online project docking management platform, fully importing the competition projects, promoting nearly 200 carrier parks in the city to carry out regular online docking, and providing preferential treatment in terms of rent, financial support, and information service for the projects to land in Suzhou, striving to construct a full-chain entrepreneurship support ecological system.
