What is Interpretation

Learning

Interpretation is the act of rendering speech into a different language. It can be done on-site or remotely, and in consecutive or simultaneous mode:

Consecutive Interpretation:

In consecutive interpretation, the speaker pauses at regular intervals to allow the interpreter to speak. The interpreter waits for the speaker to finish 2 or 3 sentences before starting their interpretation and often uses note-taking as a memory aid to ensure they repeat exactly what has been said.

Simultaneous Interpretation:

In simultaneous interpretation, interpreters work “simultaneously” as the speaker is talking, using equipment ranging from a simple microphone for the interpreter and headsets for the listeners, to fully isolated booths. There is only a slight delay, resulting in real-time interpretation.

Interpretation Settings

Interpretation is used in a variety of settings, including:

  • Legal: Attorney-client meetings, depositions, witness testimony, arbitrations, asylum matters, and court hearings.
  • Business: Small-group discussions or one-on-one meetings, focus groups, roundtable discussions, training seminars, etc.
  • Medical: Medical exams, doctor’s appointments, pharmaceutical investigator meetings, audits, etc.

In China, as globalization continues to grow, the demand for interpretation services across legal, business, and medical sectors is increasing. Effective interpretation not only facilitates cross-cultural communication but also plays a critical role in promoting international cooperation.
