What is consecutive interpreting?
Consecutive interpreting (交替传译) refers to a type of interpreting where the interpreter listens to the speaker, takes notes, and then renders the speech into the target language after the speaker has finished speaking or paused. The interpreter aims to convey the entire message in a clear, natural, and accurate manner, as if they were delivering the speech themselves. This type of interpreting typically occurs in meetings or conferences, where the speaker delivers a speech for a period of 5 to 10 minutes, after which the interpreter provides a full and accurate translation.
一.Types of Consecutive Interpreting:
l Consecutive interpreting: The interpreter alternates between two languages, interpreting for speakers of different languages in turn.
l Relay interpreting: Information is conveyed in a one-way direction, with the interpreter delivering the message in segments or phrases.
l Sight interpreting: The interpreter reads written material in the source language and then provides the spoken translation in the target language.
二.Characteristics of Consecutive Interpreting:
High information integrity: Consecutive interpreting ensures the message is conveyed accurately 1.and completely, as the interpreter has time to process the information before delivering the translation. This makes it ideal for conferences, business meetings, academic forums, and similar events.
2.Wide applicability: It is widely used, especially in smaller meetings or events. It is estimated that over 90% of smaller conferences and around 10% of larger ones use consecutive interpreting. It is suitable for various settings such as business meetings, guided tours, weddings, and product promotions.
三.Differences Between Consecutive and Simultaneous Interpreting:
1.Complexity: Simultaneous interpreting is more complex, requiring specialized equipment, such as soundproof booths and transmitters for the audience. In contrast, consecutive interpreting is simpler, requiring only a microphone for the interpreter.
2.Accuracy: Consecutive interpreting tends to be more accurate because the interpreter has more time to process and think about the speech. In simultaneous interpreting, due to the time pressure, interpreters may sometimes omit parts of the message or struggle with technical terminology they haven’t prepared for.
3.Difficulty level: While some may think consecutive interpreting is easier, it actually places high demands on the interpreter's accuracy, as they have to deliver the speech in a coherent and comprehensive manner. Although simultaneous interpreters may not directly face the audience, their task is more challenging in terms of delivering an immediate and continuous translation under time constraints.
