Five Effective Training Strategies to Improve Employee Retention
In the retail industry, the cost of employee turnover is not only reflected in the loss of investment in recruiting and training talents, but also affects the ability of merchants to provide high-quality services to increasingly discerning customers. Here are five ways to improve employee retention through effective training:
1) Develop a training plan for each employee
More than 30% of retail employees say they don’t receive any formal training on the job, the highest rate among all industries. Without the necessary information, employees can’t effectively perform their duties. This not only harms the business, but also makes employees see no value in their work and lack the motivation to improve. As technology in this field continues to advance, retailers need to train and upskill their employees to meet customer needs. Even if the training content is limited, it is important to set up a formal training plan for each employee, add more training on top of it, and establish a learning management system (LMS) to help track the implementation of training.
2) Implement strong onboarding training
Employees who have a bad onboarding experience are twice as likely to look for a new job. High-quality onboarding ensures employees are clear about their responsibilities and keeps a close eye on their commitment and engagement from the start.
3) Maximize the accessibility of training content
Providing employees with the right information is an important factor in improving productivity, but providing information in the right way is crucial to retention. Mobile learning is especially important for employees who are always on the go; delivering relevant, bite-sized learning content directly to employees' phones allows them to complete learning at a time and place that suits them.
4) Use videos to increase engagement
Teaser videos are often used effectively to generate interest in eLearning topics in the weeks leading up to a training launch. These videos will briefly introduce the training content and outline the benefits of attending. Videos can also be included in the main eLearning course to reinforce the training message, convey a direct message from the CEO (or other senior management), or more clearly demonstrate a retail scenario and possible outcomes. In recent years, it has become a popular trend to use videos with video graphics (such as those created with After Effects) to maximize the impact of the video in the training message.
5) Ensure content is available in all applicable target languages
Eliminate language barriers and help employees better understand the training information for each learning resource. Developing content suitable for localization can reduce translation costs for each language and maximize the return on investment in each target language country. If the content is translated by true domain experts, learners in the target language country will understand the training information clearly. If possible, audio and video should be re-recorded in the target language for maximum effect. Ensure that the target language version undergoes a comprehensive language quality review to ensure the top quality of the e-learning module and maximize the participation and interest of global employees.
