Translation
In translation, especially when dealing with highly specialized texts, we often need to consult a large amount of information to search for accurate translations, corresponding cultural backgrounds, or bilingual parallel texts. Information searching plays an important role in translation practice. In the past, researching required looking up paper dictionaries, visiting libraries, or consulting experts in the field for opinions. Nowadays, the internet has become the most frequently used information resource for translators.
In my personal translation practice, during the translation process from German to Chinese, I consider understanding the original German text and the meanings of words and sentences in the context as the most crucial part. Without correct comprehension, there can be no correct translation. To accurately understand the German original text, it is necessary to grasp the meanings of individual vocabulary and the structure of sentences. Often, many words and expressions require us to search and verify them, and the internet provides us with extremely convenient search tools.
We can find various content on the internet, not only in Chinese but also in foreign languages. This convenience facilitates our translation work. By comparing parallel texts, we can find the most suitable translations. For example, through Google searches, we can find the original foreign text on relevant topics and learn the most authentic and appropriate expressions as well as specific professional terms, which can help our translation work.
When encountering unfamiliar German words or rare expressions, I often search for their corresponding English expressions, then look for the Chinese expressions corresponding to the English ones for semantic comparison. I choose the interpretation that I believe best fits the original meaning for translation. Some online multilingual electronic translation dictionaries are useful tools for this purpose.
In addition to electronic dictionaries and reference books, when using search engines to assist in translation practice, I also verify and discern the search results to avoid deviations, low-quality translations, or illegal content. When translating foreign documents and encountering words that dictionaries and translation software cannot find, or when unable to understand certain terms or words in the document, although searching engines can provide assistance by finding relevant information, sometimes accurately expressing their meanings may still be challenging. In such cases, other online resources and technologies available on the internet can be utilized.
Currently, there are many free comprehensive dictionaries, specialized dictionaries, and professional databases online, consolidating various knowledge and related interpretations. Utilizing these online resources can help translate the intended meaning of the original text and the author's viewpoints more accurately. In today's highly developed information age, leveraging modern information network technology for translation assistance can significantly enhance efficiency and accuracy.
